Bänkli Illgau: Tradition
Illgau: a village with living tradition
Illgau is a mountain village with a strong character and vibrant traditions. Here, customs are actively lived and carefully preserved by both young and old. The small, close-knit community has passed down its traditions from generation to generation and continues to practise them in everyday life. Shaped by alpine farming, church life and the rhythm of nature, Illgau has retained customs that have long disappeared elsewhere. Traditional dress, music, festivals and a strong sense of togetherness define the village’s identity and give it its distinctive charm.
Sennenkilbi Illgau
A fixed highlight in Illgau’s annual calendar is the Sennenkilbi. It takes place almost every year on “Güdel”-monday and uniquely combines tradition and carnival. The celebration includes pairs of herdsmen, a traditional serenade, a procession to the church square, the customary Sennenkilbi performances, and a lively afternoon programme with music and dance. This special traditional festival brings together heritage, humour and conviviality. It is a meeting point for locals, former residents and guests alike, and plays an important role in keeping Illgau’s cultural heritage alive and passing it on to the next generation.
